Technical support mainstreaming gender equality in fisheries of the Caribbean
Fisheries and aquaculture are integral parts of the Caribbean’s sustainable development agenda as they are major providers of food security, income, culture and livelihoods for millions of people in the region. As Caribbean States design and implement sustainable development approaches in fisheries and aquaculture, equitable consideration and participation of women, men and youth in approaches will help to maximize social and economic benefits while minimizing environmental degradation and strengthening in income and food security.
EnGen Collaborative is working with the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) to support efforts to mainstream gender equality, youth empowerment and decent work issues within the fisheries sector to facilitate responsible and sustainable use of the Caribbean region’s fisheries and aquatic resources for social and economic benefits of all. EnGen is conducting stakeholder consultation, research and analysis, and providing technical guidance to inform development of a CRFM Gender Mainstreaming Analysis, Strategy and Action Plan (ASAP), among other deliverables.
Following development of the Gender Mainstreaming ASAP, EnGen Collaborative is utilizing evidence and developing materials to build capacity on the findings in the ASAP and facilitating training with regional, national and local-level stakeholders. The capacity building aims to strengthen knowledge of stakeholders and ownership with EnGen Collaborative’s support in creating national action plans to mainstream gender in fisheries.
